C.A.F.E and the Common Core

Hello Blog World!
Wow, a lot has happened since the last time I blogged, including the conclusion of the 2012-2013 school year, my husband graduating from PSU, a wedding- yes, I got married, and I have started my sixth year of teaching with a wonderful class!  I guess it's time to get caught up, and show you some of my new products that I've added to my TPT store. Yes, coffee is the theme of this year I think!

This year we have jumped right in with the CCSS, as I'm sure many of you have as well. I am on the leadership team at my school, so I have dedicated my time (as well as countless hours of my "free time") to designing themes and lessons that address the CCSS. Our first theme in 6th grade this year is "The Ancient Maya, Inca, and Aztecs." We have started by incorporating A TON of informational text- which is a huge in the Common Core- and have just started an exciting Mayan Simulation. (More information to come!)

During the first few weeks of school, much of my attention was centered around teaching the C.A.F.E. strategies and training my students to use the Daily 5. I have created quite a few PowerPoints that introduce the different strategies. You can find those on my TPT store: Here

A few examples of those PowerPoints:

I have found that these short PowerPoints are great for the first five to ten minutes of class, and then the students complete their Daily 5 and practice each of these. I have seen a vast improvement in their comprehension in these first few weeks! At the beginning these lessons were used whole group, but now each student has their own individualized goal and is working toward that goal. I meet with students as determined by a schedule that is set up based on need. This is definitely a new way of teaching at our school (we are used to walking to read, and now have all levels) but I believe the students will gain so much from this. Not mention we have way more time for students to be reading text, and most importantly they have a say in what they reading by being able to choose the books they read for pleasure!

Recently I have created a whole week's worth of lessons that are compiled into one PowerPoint addressing the CCSS R.I.6.2. Finding the Central Idea and Summarizing. This PowerPoint is based on our theme of the Ancient Maya. This PowerPoint includes:
         - Finding the Central Idea of Non-fiction
         - Text Features of informational text/ group project
         - Author's Purpose and C.A.F.E. strategy "Determine Purpose of Text"
         - Text Organization
         - Determining Bias
         - Writing a Summary without bias

Find this on TPT: Central Idea and Summarize

There is much more to come! So check back often to see what my class is up to. Leave me feedback to let me know what you like, what you don't like, or would like to see more of. Good luck to everyone this school year!
